Timberview Christian Fellowship began as an idea in 1993 among eight members from Spokane-area Free Methodist Churches. They asked Matt Thomas, a pastor who'd planted churches in the U.S. and abroad, to take the leadership role in this project. By late October, it was clear to this small group that this was God's plan.
One month later, the Columbia River Conference agreed to support the effort. By December 27, Timberview had office space rented and a reserved place for worship at Northwest Christian School. Timberview had its first service January 2, 1994, with 62 attending.
Whitworth College became Timberview's home for worship one month later, and remained so for three years. The church membership focused on studying God's Word, its application, supporting each other's spiritual journey, and worship. Through every phase of growth, a sense of family and commitment to partnership in Christ was evident.
In 1997, Timberview purchased, remodeled, and relocated to its permanent home on Howe Road. The Timberview family gave sacrificially of its finances, time, and energy toward that goal. The Columbia River Conference provided a generous gift, and the Free Methodist Foundation loaned Timberview the remaining needed funds.
The membership continued to grow, leading toward the building of a new sanctuary in 2002, built to seat over 600.
God continues to work at Timberview. Matt Thomas, who had served as senior pastor from the beginning, was elected in 2007 to serve as one of the three bishops of the Free Methodist Church of North America. That left an opening - and Timberview has been blessed to welcome Glenn Teal as its new lead pastor.
The story of Timberview continues - and the people who make up the Timberview Christian Fellowship are excited to be part of the adventure!
